LATA 65 is a unique urban art workshop that aims to banish ageist stereotypes through the art of graffiti. In various neighborhoods around Lisbon, Portugal, this class is introducing more than 100 senior citizens to youth culture. Aided by well-known street artists, the elders learn to make their own stencils and create their own street tags. In neglected and run-down neighborhoods, the senior citizens then create bright murals that add a burst of color to their dilapidated surroundings. One member named Mrs. Luisa even chose to use the tag Armando, which is a tribute to her late husband.

LATA 65 was developed by the Cowork Lisboa in partnership with Wool – Covilhã Urban Art Festival with the goal to bridge the gap between generations by proving that age is just a number. In stimulating the artistic side of the elderly, this workshop is not only helping to bring joy and motivation into the lives of Portugal’s senior citizens, it is also uplifting those that witness their vibrant creations.
